SEND Research
Evidence-Informed Practice
At PMS we are proud to be actively involved in research and development to improve outcomes for pupils with SEND. This ensures that our provision is not only responsive to individual needs, but also aligned with the latest thinking in education and psychology.
We have worked in partnership with the Staffordshire Autism Inclusion Team and University of Birmingham on a research project exploring the use of CPAT (Computerised Progressive Attention Training) to support pupils with autism. This project involved a group of pupils taking part in short, regular sessions designed to develop attention, focus and independence. Crucially, we evaluated pupil voice, staff feedback and classroom application to ensure that skills developed were transferable into everyday learning.
Alongside this, we have worked closely with the Staffordshire Educational Psychology Service to develop and implement an executive functioning programme specifically tailored to our school. This programme, now known as TOASTER, provides a clear and structured framework to support pupils in planning, organising, problem-solving and reflecting on their learning. The TOASTER approach breaks learning down into manageable steps—helping pupils to understand tasks, plan effectively, take action and review their success. This supports independence, resilience and metacognitive development across the curriculum. This work has gained recognition beyond our school, having been shared nationally and awarded a Staffordshire Innovation Award.
We are also continuing to develop our work in this area through a new partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University. This upcoming project focuses on the development of a computer-based programme designed to support pupils with emotional regulation and decision-making skills. This reflects our commitment to exploring innovative approaches that combine research, technology and classroom practice to meet the needs of our learners.
We are proud that our work not only benefits pupils within our school, but also contributes to wider developments in SEND practice through collaboration and innovation.
